Memphis the Service Dog - Honoring Our U.S. Veterans: A Story of Strength, Service, and Healing Power

Meet Memphis, a Service Dog for a United States Disabled Veteran

Our very first WINNER of our Disabled Veterans Program!

We are deeply honored to share the story of a remarkable veteran and her devoted service dog, Memphis. Their journey together is one of perseverance, healing, and unwavering strength.

In 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she reached out to New Hope Assistance Dogs for help. She was searching for more than a dog—she was seeking hope and stability in the midst of serious physical and mental health challenges stemming from her military service. That October, Memphis entered her life and became far more than a service dog. He became her light in the darkest moments, offering her a renewed sense of purpose and companionship that continues to guide her today.

Because of Memphis, she found the courage to move forward, even choosing to return to school to pursue a degree in a field she’s deeply passionate about. Her resilience is extraordinary, and we are so grateful to witness how much this partnership has empowered her to reclaim her life.

Her gear, customized to reflect both her medical and accessibility needs, will not only assist her in public by helping others understand how to support her when she’s in crisis—it will also help her move through the world with greater confidence, safety, and dignity.

Service Dog Working in Public

Before joining the military, she had dreams of a career in law enforcement. With the guidance of her father, a former police officer, she instead pursued military service and completed her basic training in Cape May, New Jersey. Unfortunately, her service came with profound challenges. While we honor her request not to share specific details, we want to acknowledge the immense courage it took to endure repeated trauma during her time on base, and the strength it required to rebuild her life after an honorable discharge.

Even today, the weight of that experience remains with her. Yet in spite of all she has faced, she has continued to move forward—with integrity, with grace, and with Memphis by her side.

We are profoundly grateful to stand alongside her on this journey and to support her and Memphis by as they continue building a life of independence, purpose, and healing. Her story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the incredible bond between a service dog and their handler.

Thank you, from all of us, for your service—and for allowing us to be a small part of your story.
